You start your adventure in the back of a moving truck. After a short bit, the truck stops and you can jump out.
Your Mom tells you that you are now in Littleroot Town and that you should check out the new house. She leads you into the house and then says you should set your clock upstairs. Walk past the two Vigoroth carrying two boxes back-and-forth, and head up the stairs. Press A while facing your clock and use the Control Pad and A button to set the clock. After doing so, your Mom comes upstairs and said that everything has been placed downstairs and that you should go down and see. So head down the stairs and your Mom says that there's an interview on Petalburg Gym on TV and that your Dad might be on. You walk to the TV and the report ends. Your Mom says, "Too bad, we must have missed him. Hey, why not check out our neighbor's house? They have a daughter/son about your age." Leave the house and head right. Enter that house and go upstairs, press A on the Pokeball and May/Brandon comes upstairs and is startled to see you. S/he learns that you are their new neighbor and starts speaking about what great friends you'll be. S/he then goes to their computer and you can leave the house. Head north and a little girl says there is screaming coming from Route 102. Head up and you'll see Prof. Birch being chased by a Zigzagoon. He tells you to grab a Pokemon over in his bag. Do so and a battle commences, beat the level two Zigzagoon, and Prof. Birch thanks you and takes you back to his lab. There, he tells you to battle May/Brandon who is on Route 103. Say yes and head north. Go through Oldale Town and continue north, the way west is blocked by a scientist who believes he found rare Pokemon tracks. Go through the grass patches on Route 103 and talk to May/Brandon. Battle ensues. This battle is tougher than the wild Pokemon if you haven't trained. S/he has the type Pokemon that can trump your Pokemon's type. It's still level 5, but it's still a tough battle. After winning, May/Brandon says to head back to Birch's lab, so head back to Littleroot Town and talk to Birch. Birch says that May/Brandon lost to you without you having too much trouble at all. He then gives you a Pokedex and five Pokeballs. Leave the lab and head north, passing your house, you Mom gives you Running Shoes, which, if you press B while walking, you can run. Leave Littleroot Town.
Head back to Oldale Town to discover that the scientist is standing aside, turns out the prints were his own. So head west to Petalburg City. Once arriving, enter the gym and talk to Norman, who is standing in the middle of the room. After a short conversation, a boy named Wally comes in. He says that he is ready to catch his Pokemon. So, your dad gives Wally a Zigzagoon and tells you to help Wally catch a Pokemon. So Wally leads you east out of town into grass. A Ralts pops up, a short battle scene commences and Wally captures the Ralts. You head back to the Gym, Wally then leaves. Norman then tells you that you are not good enough to battle him (what a mean thing to say to your son). He tells you to go Rustboro City where you can challenge the first gym in Hoenn. He says after collecting four badges, he will battle you. Leave the gym and head west to leave the city.
Route 104, this route is split into two by Petalburg Woods. However, both sides of the road have important places to visit. When you first enter the route, you are near a set of stairs leading to a beach with two trainers and one fisherman and a patch of grass to the north. Take either way. You'll see a hut, enter and see that noone is home right now. Leave the building and head north. If you want experience and some good cash, challenge the lady by the entrance to the woods, she is not too strong, and you should have an easy time. Head into the woods.
Once in, head left and a Bug Catcher sees you and starts a battle. Easy battle, especially if you chose Torchic as your starter. Continue on and you'll come across a Devon Employee, he is looking for a Shroomish when a Team Aqua Grunt attacks. You are forced into defending the Employee. Oh, well. Beat the Grunt's Poocheyana and the Grunt runs away mumbling about Aqua planning something involving Rustboro. The Employee is so grateful that he gives you one free Great Ball, which are way better than Pokeballs. Head north and head out of the woods. However, before you leave, make sure to get a Slakoth, through training, you'll get a Slaking, which have huge amounts of HP and great Defence.
On the other side of the woods, talk to the guy wearing the pink shirt, he gives you TM09(Bullet Seed), teach this to a grass Pokemon. Then enter the building beyond him. It's a flower shop, talk to all the sisters to get a berry and learning that they are not open yet. Come back when you have a Secret Base built to buy plants. Leave and head to the grass patches behind the store and use A on the bare patches of grass to get some good items. Now head right and cross the bridge, in the middle are twins who challenge you to a 2-on-2 Battle. They are a bit(an eety-bitty) tougher than the other trainers around. So, do all you can. Upon winning, they let you pass. So forge on and at the end of the bridge and head right to an Old Lady, talk to her and you'll receive a Wailmer Pail which is essentially a watering can. Then head north to Rustboro City.
Rustboro City, it is the first big city you'll come across in Hoenn. It has a Gym, a Pokemon Trainer School, and the Stone Co. HQ Building. Naturally there is a Pokemon Center and a Shop. Head to both to heal your Pokemon and buy supplies for the Gym. Head to the Gym and go inside. The gym is a bunch of corridors with threee junior trainers, one 1-on-1 trainer, and one 2-on-2 set. Beat them and heal immediatley afterwards before facing Roxanne.
Gym Battle: #1 Roxanne:
Roxanne is the Rock Type Gym Leader and is tough for the first gym. However, all the starters could have an easy time here, you'll need to evolve Torchic into Combusken for an easy fight however. The Geodudes are both Level 12. Not that bad. However, her last Pokemon is a Level 15 Nosepass. This is a tough one that constantly uses Rock Tomb, which slows down your Pokemon if it hits as well as doing a decent amount of damage. After winning, you get the Stone Badge, which lets you use HM01(Cut). Also, you get TM39(Rock Tomb).
Leave the Gym and you'll see the Aqua Grunt from before, right behind is the Stone Employee. Follow north and head east and you'll see the exhausted Employee saying that Aqua cannot get the Goods. So head east on the path and defeat the Trainers who are scattered around the road. There is a small chance that you'll see a Skitty, which are rare, do you're best to catch one. Continue on until you see and old man lamenting over Aqua stealing his precious Pokemon, Peeko. Head into the cave right next to him and you'll see the Grunt, follow him and you'll engage him in battle. You should easily beat him again. He gives up and then complains about his luck, how the tunnel was a dead end, and the hostage Peeko was useless. So he leaves and gives Peeko back to the old man at the entrance. Exit the tunnel and the old man introduces himself to you, he's Mr. Briney, a veteran sailor. He leaves back to his house. Allowing you to return to Rustboro with the stolen Goods. Head back and talk to the Employee, he gives you a Great Ball and escorts you to the top floor of the Stone HQ Building. The boss, Mr. Stone, is grateful that you recovered the Goods, and asks you to deliver the Goods to Capt. Stern in Slateport City, and to deliver a Letter to Steven in Dewford Town. You're forced into it, and to make a fair deal, Mr. Stone gives you a Poke'Gear. This is an item trainers use to see a map of Hoenn, the Contest Status of your team Pokemon, a telephone, and other imporant things a trainer needs.
After being sent to do Mr. Stone's errands, return to the Petalburg City side of Petalburg Woods and enter the hut from before, there will be Mr. Briney, chasing Peeko...? Talk to him and he says he is very grateful for your help saving Peeko and will sail you to Dewford and Slateport, you head off to Dewford only at first, but after giving the Letter to Steven and beating the Gym, you can head on to Slateport. However, before doing that, talk to the nearby fisherman to get an Old Rod. This is the first rod you get in the game and only catches low-level Magikarp and Tentacool. Through time and getting better rods, you can get the most out of fishing. Then go into the big building with the boy outside to find a "Cool Phrase" Group. Exit and head to the building to the immediate right and talk to the people inside and get a Silk Scarf. Now enter the gym.
This is the second gym, a fighting type gym. It's almost pitch-black, making navigation hard. However, every time you beat a trainer, the gym lights up just a bit. But this bit is very, very helpful. Brawly, the Gym Leader is all the way in the upper-left corner of the gym. Find him and he explains the darkness of the gym. He then goes into battle.
Gym Battle: #2 Brawly
Brawly is the fighting type leader. You'll do well to have a flying type for the battle, or, if you caught an Abra already, to evolve it into Kadabra. Machop is Level 16 and will fall easily. Meditite is a pain who uses Detect often, rendering any attack useless for that turn. Makuhita, this Level 19 fighting Pokemon is one tough cookie with high HP and defence. It's attack is no laughing matter either. Use flying and psychich attacks and it should fall relatively quickly. Winning gives you a Knuckle Badge, which makes Pokemon traded with a level up to 30 will obey you, also lets you use HM05(Flash). He also gives you TM08(Bulk Up) which increases the user's Attack and Defence.
Now that you beat Brawly, the gym's lights are turned on all the way. Now leave the gym and head north then west to a cave entrance. Enter the cave and get Flash from the Hiker at the entrance. After teaching a Pokemon Flash so that when you go farther down, you can light the way. About half way through the cave, you'll find a light stone on a platform, press A on it to get an Everstone, and item that prevents a Pokemon's evolution without having to press B every level up. This is great if you want to have your Pokemon learn a move that it can't learn in it's evolved form. Continue on through the caves into a small chamber with a silver haired man inside. This is Steven, he thanks you for the letter and gives you TM47(Steel Wing) this is perfect for a Skarmory, so hold onto it until you get one. Since there was an Escape Rope at the beginning of the cave, you can use it to leave immediately.
TIP: Once you get the Mach Bike in Mauville City, come back to the Basement floor and bike up the slope area. Then dash over the cracked tiles and your reward will be a Rare Candy, which levels up one Pokemon by one level.
